Foods Actual Expiration Date

Foods Actual Expiration Date

If you're someone who throws caution to the wind when it comes to expiration dates- in many cases you're right to do so.  "Sell By" and "Best Before" dates don't necessarily mean the item's gone bad.  I practice the smell-and-eyeball test.  If it smells alright and doesn't have any visible mold- I'll give it a try.

A 2013 report from Harvard Law School and the Natural Resources Defense Council states confusion over food dating has led 91 percent of Americans to throw away food prematurely.  (Yahoo)

Here are a few groceries that last longer than you might think...

EGGS- They should keep for 3 to 5 weeks in the refrigerator.

CEREAL- can stay fresh for up to three months if you refold the inner bag tightly.

APPLES- Store your favorite reds in the fridge (place them in a plastic bag; poke a few holes to allow air to circulate), and they’ll still be good to eat three weeks later.

DELI MEAT- You can keep unopened packages of sandwich meat in your fridge for two weeks—even if the “Sell By” date has come and gone.

BREAD- Placing your loaf of bread in the fridge can extend freshness by 2 weeks.
