This specific vacation event gets its own post. I spent the long weekend in Seattle with Falen from KDWB and Ellen who also works in radio but neither of us had actually met in person. Ellen was sweet enough to let us stay at her place for two nights and drive us around and do touristy type stuff.
We arrived in Washington, Thursday evening, went to dinner and then pretty much called it a night. While Ellen was working the next morning and Falen was still sleeping, I decided to walk to Starbucks and then stopped to buy some roses for our hostess. When I got back to the condo, the flowers had to be cut before putting them in a vase. I should mention that at this point- Falen was awake and sitting on the couch with Ellen’s sweet (or so I thought) small, fluffy dog- Charlie.

Using scissors a preschooler would scoff at- I began cutting the stems. The dog was at my feet in the kitchen as a stem flew off the table and landed on the floor. Charlie picked it up and ran into the living room. I went chasing after him. The small piece of stem had a thorn on it and killing a woman’s dog that I’d just met and was letting us crash at her place was not on my to-do-list.
“Charlie- give that to me,” I said as I reached for the rose’s end. He growled but at the time it felt more like a playful sound.
THEN IT HAPPENED.
Charlie dropped the stem and lunged at me attaching his tiny but strong mouth to the meaty part of my right hand- and he wouldn’t let go! I haven’t been that scared in a long time. He bit down once, barked and then sunk his teeth in one more time before he let go.

My hand was throbbing and bleeding, Falen had started laughing and Charlie was guarding the stem as I headed to the sink to soak my hand...

getting as much distance from that white, hand muncher as I could.

Charlie feeling badly.
My hand was sore and disgusting looking the rest of the day. That night we stayed at my Uncle’s house. The next morning, while on the phone with Jeff, he asked, “When was the last time you had a tetanus shot?” I couldn’t remember and after some googling discovered I could get lockjaw if I wasn’t vaccinated. Who knew Walgreens gave tetanus shots? They do! I am terrified of shots and in the same way Falen consoled me after the bite with laughter, my Uncle Jim took a video of me getting needled in the arm.
This was my first dog bite and hopefully my last. I learned a valuable lesson this weekend too…When a dog growls at you, stop whatever you’re doing and leave it alone AND my friends and family like to laugh and video my misfortunes.
