Vocal powerhouse, Martina McBride stopped by the K102 Roadhouse Monday night for a intimate performance to a handful of lucky listeners. Beth and I saw Martina McBride headling Country Jam this summer and she was stunning from 200 yards away, let alone 25 feet away (I had to use all my strength not to bust into fan girl mode when she shook my hand before the show). After a few opening difficulties on “Broken Wing”, she settled in to deliver an amazing set. McBride was in a jovial mood, laughing with audience, talking about her children before “Teenage Daughters” and joking that its the only way to follow a song [“I’m Gonna Love You Through It”] like that.  While it did feel she held back in a few key diva “Martina” moments in “Whatcha Gonna Do” (new from Eleven) and “I’m Going to Love You Through It” but understandably it was a small space.

Its not a secret that I am not a huge fan of female artist (with exceptions of course) with the lack of real substance to many of their material and the ditsy blond routine many labels try to pander, but Martina is a vocal powerhouse with a honest, shining personality, which is kept her a consistent favorite for country fans these past two decades. It was a rare opportunity to see not only a country super star but all genre icon like Martina McBride in personal setting was overwhelming.
