It looks like Jake Owen's hand injury from his go-kart accident earlier this month was WAY worse than he let on. According to Owen, he crushed his hand so badly that he's still not sure if he'll ever play guitar again, golf, or surf.
In an interview with CMT, Owen says that he was racing at about 40-mph when he crashed.
"I was coming around this corner and I spun it and I flipped it and I rolled it," he said. Owen adds, "I landed, and then I was like, 'What the . . .?' I had a full racing jacket on, helmet, gloves and everything. But I just stood up, and everybody was like, 'Whoa, whoa, whoa.' Because they saw me flip on my head and then flip back over. But then I was like, 'God, my hand hurts.' Then I looked at my hand and the glove was just disintegrated."
Owen went to the local hospital to get stiches and then flew home. Once back in Tennessee, surgeons had to sew his fingers back on and rebuild his shattered bones!
"They basically put my fingers back on. I have 40 stitches, from the interior out. I shattered my fingers . . . the bones inside," Owen said. He added that, "The doctor said it was like taking a cinderblock and dropping it on your hand. Like it spider webbed the bones inside my fingers. So he had to suture the bones back up to even make it a bone and then put a screw in there to keep it together."
His doctors still don't know if he will ever be able to fully use his hand or fingers again.
Headed in for surgery... I was trying to avoid it, but since I play guitar for a living I need to get this done. 👍 pic.twitter.com/2QgTL1m6cq— Jake Owen (@jakeowen) July 9, 2013
